Dr. Joel Powell

Director

Dr. Joel Powell is an educator, legal professional, community leader, and devoted follower of Jesus Christ whose work reflects a commitment to education, service, leadership, and faith. He serves as a Professor of Political Science at multiple colleges in California, where he teaches courses examining American government, law, political philosophy, constitutional principles, and the relationship between institutions, power, justice, and individual liberty. Throughout his career in higher education, Dr. Powell has sought to challenge students not simply to acquire information, but to think critically, examine competing perspectives, and develop the intellectual tools necessary to become thoughtful and engaged members of their communities.

In addition to his work in the classroom, Dr. Powell has served in numerous administrative and leadership capacities focused on student success, educational equity, policy development and evaluation, mentorship, and expanding pathways into higher education and the legal profession. His professional experience also includes legal research, public policy, and community advocacy. Across these roles, he remains passionate about creating opportunities for students and communities that have encountered barriers to educational and professional advancement.

Central to Dr. Powell's life and leadership is his Christian faith. As a follower of Jesus Christ, he believes that faith is more than something professed; it should be demonstrated through service, stewardship, humility, compassion, justice, and love for others. As a member and ministry leader at The Building Christian Fellowship in Suisun, CA, his Christian walk is grounded in an ongoing desire to grow closer to Christ through prayer, studying and teaching Scripture, serving within the church, and helping others apply biblical principles to the practical challenges of everyday life.

Whether teaching in the classroom, mentoring students, serving his community, or participating in ministry, Dr. Powell seeks to faithfully steward the gifts and opportunities God has entrusted to him. His goal is simple: to leave people, institutions, and communities better than he found them while using his life and work to serve others and ultimately glorify God.

Through his service with The BLOC Ministries, Dr. Powell is committed to helping advance the mission of reaching and empowering young people through faith, leadership, education, mentorship, and opportunity.
